The Committee for the Protection of Prisoners’ Rights has called for the inclusion of Sri Lanka’s prison system in the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative launched by the new government. Highlighting the urgent need for reform, the committee emphasized critical issues such as bribery by prison officials, violence within the prison system, the practice of granting pardons to political allies, and the arbitrary processes occurring in the Bussa Prison.
The committee stressed that a comprehensive cleanup of the prison system is essential to uphold justice, eliminate corruption, and ensure humane treatment for all prisoners. They urged the government to prioritize prison reforms as a key part of the broader national initiative to create a cleaner, more accountable Sri Lanka.
