“මහර සිරකරු සමුහ ඝාතනය යටපත් කිරීමට නීතිපතිට ඉඩ නොදී යුක්තිය වෙනුවෙන් පෙලගැසෙමු” යන මැයෙන් අද පෙරවරුවේ කොළඹ කොටුවේ සිට ජනාධිපති ලේකම් කාර්යාලය වෙතට පා ගමනක් සිරකරු අයිතිවාසිකම් සුරැකීමේ කමිටුව විසින් පැවැත්වීය. මේ සඳහා නීතීඥවරුන්, මානවහිමිකම් ආරක්ෂකයන්, සිවිල් සංවිධාන නියෝජිතයන්, සිවිල් ක්‍රියාකාරීන් ඇතුලු පිරිසක් සභාගී විය. මෙම පා ගමන නැවැත්වීමට පොලීසිය විවිධ උත්සාහ දැරුවද පිරිස අඛණ්ඩව ජනාධිපති ලේකම් කාර්යාලය දක්වා ගමන්ගත් අතර ජනාධිපති ලේකම්වරයා සමඟ සාකච්චාවක් පවත්වා ජනාධිපතිවරයාට සංදේශයක්ද බාර දීමට කටයුතු කළේය.

March to the Presidential Secretariat for Prisoner Rights
The Committee for the Protection of Prisoners’ Rights organized a march from Colombo Fort to the Presidential Secretariat under the slogan, “Let’s Not Allow the Attorney General to Suppress the Mass Killing of Prisoners.” The demonstration brought together lawyers, human rights defenders, representatives from civil society organizations, and activists advocating for prisoner rights.
Despite multiple attempts by the police to disrupt the march, the group persevered and reached the Presidential Secretariat. There, representatives held a discussion with the President’s Secretary and formally presented a memorandum addressed to the President.
Key Demands Presented in the Meeting
1. Justice for the Mahara Prison murders.
2. Implementation of a four-year prisoner review process.
3. Evacuation and closure of the Bussa Prison.
During the discussion, the President’s representatives assured the Committee for the Protection of Prisoners’ Rights that a decision regarding the Mahara Prison killings would be communicated within ten days. They also agreed to convene a follow-up meeting at a future date to address the remaining concerns.
